How to verify a nursing college before you pay

Every approval a college claims can be checked by you, free, on a government website, in about twenty minutes. Here is exactly where to look, for any college you're considering, including the ones listed on NursingDisha.

Checks That Matter2

Questions To Ask10
01 - Fundamentals

The two checks
that matter

Most students check one thing and stop. For nursing there are two separate approvals, from two separate bodies, and a college can hold one without the other.

Check 01

University affiliation, who awards your degree. A college doesn't award degrees on its own, a university does. Nursing colleges are affiliated to a state health sciences university. Affiliation is what makes your marks card and degree certificate valid documents.

Check 02

Council approval, whether you can register and work. A second body approves the specific programme: the Indian Nursing Council (INC) nationally, and your State Nursing Council. Without this, you may hold a valid degree and still be unable to register as a nurse.

!

The gap that catches people out. A college can be affiliated to a university while a particular programme is not approved by the nursing council, or was approved for an earlier year and not renewed. Always check the approval for your course, in your admission year.

Where to check,
by nursing course

All of these are free and public. None require an account.

Degree

Post Basic B.Sc

INC recognition specific to the post-basic programme, a separate approval from the regular B.Sc.

Master's

M.Sc Nursing

INC recognition and university affiliation for the postgraduate programme.

Any University

Any Degree

That the affiliating university itself is recognised, and is not on the fake list.

Regulator portals are dated by academic year and occasionally move. Treat the official council site as the final word if a link above is outdated.

The lists nobody
thinks to check

Everyone looks for a college's name on an approved list. Far fewer check the lists of institutions that have been closed, de-recognised, or declared fake.

UGC Fake Universities

Institutions calling themselves universities with no legal authority to award any degree.

ugc.gov.in →

INC Withdrawn Institutions

Nursing programmes whose recognition has lapsed or been withdrawn for the current year.

indiannursingcouncil.org →

State Council De-recognised List

Colleges whose state-level recognition has been suspended or cancelled.

state councils →

Do both searches. Find the college on the approved list and confirm it is absent from the closed or de-recognised lists, it catches the situation that hurts most: a course approved when the brochure was printed and not approved now.

Will you actually be
able to practise?

The degree is only half of it. You also have to register with a nursing council before you can legally work, and that registration depends on where you studied.

Registration after qualifying

You register with the State Nursing Council of the state where you studied. That council is your parent council; to work in another state you obtain a no-objection certificate and register there too.

National registry

The Indian Nursing Council also runs the Nurses Registration and Tracking System (NRTS), giving every nurse a unique identity number.

nrts.indiannursingcouncil.gov.in →

!

Ask this directly: "If I complete this course here, which state nursing council will I register with, and has that council approved this programme for my admission year?" A college that can't answer that in one sentence is a college to walk away from.

Eight warning signs

None of these prove a college is bad on their own. Two or three together are worth taking seriously.

!

No written fee breakup. A genuine institution gives a year-by-year, itemised fee structure on letterhead before you pay anything.

!

Pressure to pay today. Real deadlines are published dates, not something told to you on a call.

!

Payment to a personal account. Fees go to the official account against an official receipt, never to an individual.

!

Guaranteed job or seat. No institution can guarantee either, placement assistance is real, a placement guarantee is not.

!

Approval claimed, never evidenced. Ask for the letter or reference number, "we are approved" is not an answer.

!

Vague on the affiliating university. The college should name it immediately and without qualification.

!

Can't visit or see the hospital. For a clinical course, ask why if you can't walk through the training facilities.

!

Nobody knows where last batch went. An institution that trains people should know what happened to them.

Ten questions
to ask in writing

Email or WhatsApp, so you have the answer on record. Any institution that will only answer these by phone is telling you something.

01

Which university awards this degree, and is the college currently affiliated for this course?

02

Which council approves this programme, and what is the approval reference number?

03

What is the sanctioned intake for this course this year?

04

Can you send the year-wise fee structure on letterhead, including exam fees, uniforms and materials?

05

Is accommodation included, and if not, what does it cost per year?

06

Which hospitals do students train at, and are they owned by the institution or partners?

07

When do clinical postings begin -- first year or later?

08

Is the internship arranged by the college, and where?

09

Where did last year's graduating batch go, and can I speak to a current student?

10

What is the refund policy if I withdraw before the course begins?

How NursingDisha
verifies colleges

Before a college appears on our colleges page, we run it through the same checks explained above.

Approval check

We confirm INC and State Nursing Council recognition for the specific programme and current academic year.

Negative-list check

We check the college isn't on any closed, withdrawn or de-recognised list before listing it.

Fee transparency

We ask colleges for a written, itemised fee structure rather than publishing vague ranges.

Found something that doesn't check out on a college listed with us? Tell us and we'll correct it.

Common
questions

Is a college being "government recognised" enough?

No, because the phrase is vague. Ask which government body, for which programme, and for the reference number. A trust being registered with the state government is not the same as a nursing programme being approved by the Indian Nursing Council.

The college is on the approved list. Am I done?

Almost. Confirm the listing covers your specific course and your admission year, and check the college does not also appear on a closed or de-recognised list. Approvals are renewed periodically and can lapse.

What if I cannot find the college on any list?

Ask the college directly for the approval letter, then verify it with the issuing council using contact details from the council's official site, not a number the college gives you. If nothing checks out, do not pay.

Does NAAC accreditation mean the same as approval?

No. NAAC assesses and grades quality; it does not authorise a college to run a programme or award a degree. A college can be properly approved without a NAAC grade.

Do I need NEET for B.Sc Nursing?

No. NEET applies to MBBS, BDS and AYUSH courses. B.Sc Nursing admission is based on 10+2 or PUC marks in Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

An agent is arranging my admission. Does that change anything?

It changes nothing about what you should verify, and adds one thing: confirm the person is authorised by the institution, and pay the institution directly against an official receipt rather than paying the agent.
